Need Based Grants
Paying for college completely out of pocket is virtually impossible for some people. Many students in the United States will seek financial aid throughout the course of their education to cover the cost of tuition fees and expenses. In most circumstances students usually need only a small amount of financial assistance to aid there education, but for some families, due to extremely low incomes without the help of a needs-based grant students would not be able to afford to study at all. What is a Need Based Grant?Need-based grants are grants available to students if they are not in a financial position to cover the full costs of their education.
The federal government fund most need based grants, the most common federal grant programs available include the Federal Pell Grant, the (FSEOG) Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant and the Federal Work Study program, although some state governments provide need-based grant funding as well.Qualifying Factors for a Need-Based GrantAlthough families who have incomes below a set level can qualify for need-based grants, there are many other factors that make college students eligible for federal grant based financial aid, this means that students who have a significant financial income may receive financial assistance. It is also useful to note that need-based grants do not rely on your grades for approval.
Factors that may determine a student's eligibility for a “need-based grant” include:Expected family contribution - (how much money the students family can contribute to their education)Family assets after income - (assists held by both the student and family)Number family members classed as “dependent family”Number of dependent family members attending post secondary education and / or collegeApplicants current student status and dependent families student status
Benefits of Applying for a Need-Based Grant
If applicants are awarded a need based grant they won’t have to pay it back after competing their studies. It is important that the applicant stays enrolled as a fulltime student whilst receiving the grant money as this is part of the award conditions. It is also possible that they could lose the grant money if their income increases whilst the need based grant is supporting their education fees. If students meet all the eligibility requirements set out for grant aid through the FAFSA but they are unsure if they meet the application criteria, they should apply anyway. Need based grants are assessed using several criteria’s and if students don’t apply they could miss out on potential student aid funding that does not have to be repaid.
