The leading source of grant funds for minority students are federal and state government sources who provide need-based grants for minority students based on the level of personal and family income. The most common federal government grant has to be the Federal Pell Grant followed by the FSEOG award and Academic Competitiveness Grant, and each of these are awarded based on the information provided in a FAFSA Application.Although there are many grants available to minority school students, federal aid is the most distributed source of financial funding. If applicants are not eligible to receive the federal Pell grant, then they will not be allowed access to any of the other federal grants as they all require students to be recipients of the Pell program.
Other Sources of Minority Student FundingWhether minority students are eligible for federal funding or not, they will be able to apply for other sources of funding through foundations and private organizations. There are several well known minority foundations that run funding programs and scholarships purposely to assist minority students pursue a specific field of study and work towards a professional career. These foundations include: Hispanic College Fund, The Bureau of International Affairs, The American Indian College Fund and the United Negro College Fund.
